Hillam Village

Ruth Laycock

Ruth came to the village in 1940 and whose family business was a goat farm.
The goats milk was made into a delicious ice cream which was supplied to all the local cinemas.

Charlie Denton
Born in the village, Charlie has spent a lifetime in farming, finally farming and living at Prospect Farm before retiring to his bungalow.  His memories of village life includes the time of wells, and water from the village pump. His father was gardener at Roselea School.

Mary Denton (nee Leach)
The Leach family business in late 1890’s was in the hay and straw trade. The main customers were in Leeds but mechanisation killed the business so her grand father and father diversified into farming.  Born at Orchard Farm, Hillam Mary then lived at Home Farm. She went to Rose Lea School before working on various farms.  When she married Charlie she moved to Prospect Farm.
